This Is the Amount of Caffeine in Different Coffee Drinks

Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in tea leaves and coffee beans which excites the brain and nervous system. For many people, caffeine is the main reason they start their day with tea or coffee. Within 15-45 minutes of consumption, caffeine boosts energy and alertness levels. These effects can last for several hours, depending on the individual.

Up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is considered healthy for an average adult coffee drinker.

Students and workers alike turn to caffeine to give them a daily productivity boost. With caffeine being prominent in billions of people’s lives, this article will cover caffeine contents, global caffeine statistics and an FAQ about caffeine.

The Caffeine Content of Various Coffee Drinks

Global Caffeine Statistics

Coffee Consumption Trends

Despite the United States of America presumably spending the most on coffee in 2021, the top three countries with the highest coffee consumption per capita are the Netherlands, Finland and Sweden.

In fact, in terms of pounds of coffee consumed per person each year, the United States ranked 14th worldwide.

Coffee Revenue Trends

According to Statista’s most recent data, the revenue generated by both roasted and instant coffee likely bounces back in 2021 despite taking temporary dips in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most of the revenue will be generated by the U.S.A., which may consume a market volume of US$81,166m in 2021 alone. Other major revenue generators include Brazil, Japan, Canada, and Germany.

What Is Caffeine?

Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in tea leaves and coffee beans which excites the brain and nervous system. It has been labeled the most popular drug in the world with roughly 90% of the U.S. population consuming it in some form every day.

Being a mild stimulant, it is generally harmless and can be found as an active ingredient in many prescription medications in order to boost their effectiveness

The energizing effect of caffeine is the main reason that 58% of U.S. consumers drink coffee in the first place.

How Much Caffeine Is In Coffee?

The average cup of coffee contains about 95 mg of caffeine. However, depending on the:

  • type of beverage
  • coffee beans used and how they were roasted
  • size of the cup
  • exact drink recipe used

The precise caffeine levels will range from below 10 mg to over 500 mg.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a typical espresso contains 64 mg of caffeine. As noted earlier, a brewed cup of coffee will have around 95 mg of caffeine, while an instant coffee will contain 62 mg of caffeine.

If you’re curious about the caffeine levels of specific coffee brands, please consult the chart at the top of this page. If there is an entry you would like to see added, please let us know on our social media.

Is Caffeine Good For You?

Depending on your overall health and lifestyle, caffeine can positively impact your energy levels and fat-burning metabolism. It can also provide your body with much-needed antioxidants. Studies have also shown that coffee consumption could be linked to a lowered risk of certain cancer types. And it has even been associated with a one-third lower risk for Parkinson’s disease.

So far, research has shown that humans do not need caffeine. In general, a person can choose to remove it from his/her diet entirely without worrying about significant negative consequences to his/her overall health.

 Is Caffeine Dangerous?

As long as you consume less than 400 mg of caffeine per day, caffeine is generally harmless.

However, this estimate still varies from person to person. So if you are interested in learning more about how much caffeine is safe for you to consume, see our next question: “How Much Caffeine Should I Drink Per Day?”

Once consumed, caffeine increases the amount of acid released in the stomach. This can lead to heartburn or to an upset stomach

Other side effects of consuming too much caffeine include:

  • Insomnia
  • Dizziness
  • Restlessness
  • Dehydration
  • Anxiety

Individuals with glaucoma, epilepsy, acid reflux, and insomnia may want to reduce or completely stop their daily intake of caffeine.

For anyone who does not have medical conditions aggravated by caffeine but would like to reduce their caffeine intake anyway, you can learn more about decaffeinated coffee in our “The Process Of Decaffeinating Coffee” article.

You can also check out our recommendations for the 10 Best Decaffeinated Coffees.

How Much Caffeine Should I Drink Per Day?

As mentioned before, the human body does not require caffeine. However, if you would like to experience the benefits mentioned in the previous section, research has shown that consuming up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is healthy.

This estimate varies from person to person. Some factors to pay attention to include:

How Can I Reduce The Amount of Caffeine In My Cup?

If you’re wondering whether your daily caffeine intake goes above the 400 mg per day recommendation, then you might find our Coffee Calculator useful. It will provide you with insights into how you can adjust your coffee preparation and intake to hit your caffeine intake goals.

Four main factors affect the amount of caffeine in your coffee. These are the:

Coffee Bean Variety/Species

Depending on who you ask, people will say that there are 2, 3, 4, or 7 main coffee beans species and numerous other subspecies. For now, it would appear that the most widely accepted figure is that there are three main species of coffee beans: Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica

NOTE: The Excelsa species was previously considered a fourth main species of coffee beans, but it was reclassified in 2006 as part of the Liberica family.

Of the three remaining species, Arabica coffee has garnered a reputation of having the best flavour. It also retains its flavour for much longer than the other main species. Thus, it is no surprise that it is currently the most widely circulated coffee bean species globally, accounting for roughly 60% of worldwide coffee circulation. Arabica coffee is grown in high altitudes under cooler conditions.

The next most widely circulated species is the Robusta coffee—which can thrive even in lower altitudes and warmer climates.  It accounts for roughly 30% of the worldwide coffee circulation and contains almost twice as much caffeine than Arabica coffee. This higher caffeine content is also the reason for its more bitter taste and higher acidity.

Liberica and/or Excelsa coffee make up just 7% of the worldwide coffee circulation. They have the lowest caffeine content of all the main species. However, since they are so rarely cultivated and sold, it is unlikely that this is the coffee you have in your house right now.

Roasting Process

Many people believe that lighter roasted coffee contains more caffeine than darker roasted coffee. This belief comes from the assumption that the roasting process significantly alters the coffee beans’ chemical composition. And so it was assumed that less roasting leads to less caffeine lost.

However, in recent years, experiments have shown that coffee beans’ caffeine content remains consistent throughout the roasting process.

While it is technically correct that lighter roasts have more caffeine, science has shown that the difference is negligible

Brewing Method

From the French press to the drip coffee maker, there are different ways to brew your coffee grounds and extract their flavour. Technically speaking, one cup of drip coffee (8 fl oz) contains more caffeine than an espresso (1 fl oz)

However, as you can tell from the chart at the top of this page, a typical espresso contains a higher caffeine concentration per millilitre (or fluid ounce). The coffee beans’ smaller grounds mean that water can more easily extract a high amount of caffeine when preparing a drip coffee or espresso.

The French press method uses coarser coffee grounds, making it more difficult for the hot water to extract caffeine. In short, switch to any coffee brewing method that uses coarser coffee grounds to help reduce your caffeine intake.

NOTE: There are conflicting opinions regarding whether cold brews typically contain higher caffeine content than their hot water counterparts.

As is the case with all coffees, cold brew’s caffeine content largely depends on its ingredients and preparation. One cup of cold brew usually has a water-coffee ratio of 1:4 or 1:8. It is usually much stronger than a typical hot coffee with a water-coffee ratio between 1:15 down to 1:25.

Another factor contributing to cold brew’s higher caffeine content is that it usually infuses 12-18 hours—which is significantly longer than their hot water counterparts.

However, the cold brew recipe may call for additional ingredients like sugar, syrup, milk, etc. It could then significantly water down the caffeine content of one cup of cold brew, bringing it closer to regular coffee’s dilution.

Serving Size

It seems like common sense, right? Consuming a smaller cup of coffee means that you’ll be consuming less caffeine than if you had drunk a bigger one.

Yes, that’s a good rule of thumb.

However, consult the “mg of caffeine/100 ml” column of the chart at the top of this article. You will get a better idea of caffeine concentration and how it varies widely between the different kinds of coffee drinks.

For example, an espresso shot (30 ml or 1 fl oz) is far smaller than a typical coffee cup (237 ml or 8 fl oz). So it’s not surprising that the regular espresso only contains a total of 64 mg of caffeine, whereas the typical cup of brewed coffee contains 96 mg of caffeine

But in terms of caffeine concentration, the espresso crushes the brewed coffee.

As you can see in the chart, you would find a whopping 213 mg of caffeine in 100 ml (3 fl oz) of espressos. By contrast, 100 ml (3 fl oz) of a brewed coffee would only give you 40 mg of caffeine

Ordering smaller coffee sizes is a good start. But you should also be paying attention to the type of coffee beverage you consume since each drink type contains differing caffeine concentration levels.

In Summary

You can reduce your caffeine intake by:

  • Using Arabica coffee beans
  • Using darker roasted beans if possible. However, if you don’t like their taste, you can stick with light/medium roasts since the caffeine difference is minimal.
  • Using brewing methods that use larger coffee grounds.
  • Reducing the serving size of your coffee.
  • Choosing a coffee drink type which contains lower caffeine concentrations relative to its volume.
  • Drinking decaffeinated coffee.
